29 Japanese Organizations Found in Clarivate’s Top 100 Global Innovators for 2021

Clarivate, global IP analyst, sets out annually to find the world’s largest innovation engines. This year, it issued its tenth Top 100 Global Innovators” awards. This year, The USA was represented by 41, but East Asia combined rivaled its numbers. Japan, in particular, in spite of its waning relative influence, has much steam.

Twenty-nine Japanese organizations were on the Top 100 list–some famous like Toyota, Honda, and Panasonic and some less so, but many big names appear on Clarivate’s list. Four Chinese (mainland) organizations including Huawei made the top 100. Five Korean ones did, as did five Taiwanese ones.[1] Korea’s KAIST was the only academic institution to be on the list.[2]

Japan’s economic influence is on the wane relative to other Asian powerhouses, to be sure, but the heritage and momentum will carry it for some time, and Clarivate’s results suggest there is yet plenty of room for growth in the decades to come. As open innovation becomes more acceptable to major corporations (like Panasonic and Kyocera), further cooperative intellectual property development is a likely prospect.
